Mexico's Cultural Regions

                                             

The cultural regions in Mexico by tradition have been divided between the Spanish culture in the north and the Indian culture in the south. The country can be divided further into 10 cultural regions.

The Baja California peninsula, Central, West, Balsas, Gulf Coast, Southern Highlands, and Yucatan Peninsula, North, Northeast, Northwest.

The lightly populated North Mexico Reigon covers the states of Chihushua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi.

The Northeast Mexico cultural region stretches from Tampico to the United States border and to the Sierra Madre Oriental, including the states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

The Northwest is a wide region lying west of the crest of the Sierra Madre Occidental and then stretching south from the Sonora state on the United States border through Sinaloa and northern Nayarit.

Baja California Mexico is a peninsula that includes the cultural region of the states of Baja California in the north and Baja California Sur in the south.

The Central cultural region extends over the central and eastern portions of the Mesa Central and the states of Hidalog, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Mexico City.

The West is centered on the city of Guadalajara and includes the state of Jalisco along with portions of the states of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Colima, Nayarit, and Guanajuato. 

The Balsas cultural region extends from Balsas through northern Guerrero State of Mexico.

The Gulf Coast cultural region includes the coastal areas of Tabasco states and the connecting east-facing slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental.

The Southern Highlands cultural region includes most of the states of Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.

The Yucatán Peninsula cultural region includes the states of Yucatan Mexico and Campeche and Quintana Roo Mexico.

 
Mexico has many interesting and diverse cities scattered all over the country, there pottery contributions are not only tremendously interesting from a historical and cultural viewpoint, they  are also a sight to see and highly recommended to tourists. Some of these cities include Tijuana, Playa del Carmen, Oaxaca, Xalapa, Aguascalientes, Monterrey as well as the capital, Mexico City, among many others. Each culture has its own styles and methods that are used to produce the type of pottery offered in their cultural regionsin Mexico.
