It's the properties of the ceramics that makes them appropriate for certain products. Let’s look at the different types.
Abrasives are extremely hard types of ceramic materials that are used for cutting metals. some uses for abrasives
include grinding, polishing, cutting, drilling, sharpening and sanding. For these types the ceramic materials include
alumina and silicon carbide.
Construction materials: Clay and shale are used in making strong durable bricks and drainpipes. Brick is used to build homes and commercial buildings because it is the only building product that will not burn, dent, melt, peel, warp, rot, rust. Cement consists of calcium silicates and is used mostly in making concrete. Gypsum is used for plaster used on the surfaces of walls and ceilings. Porcelain is one of the types of ceramic we are all familiar with Bathtubs, sinks, and toilets are made of porcelain (clay, feldspar, and quartz.)
Dinnerware: Ceramics are excellent containers for food and drink storage. These types of ceramics do not absorb liquids, and they resist acids, salts, detergents, and changes in temperature. Also they don’t take on the smell of the food. Most dinnerware is made from a mixture of different types of clays, feldspar, and quartz.
Electrical equipment: Ceramics types that do not conduct electricity like in a car spark plug are used as insulators just like the piece you see on electric power lines, and in television sets. Such types include alumina and porcelain. Another material, barium titanite, is used in making capacitors, which store electric charges in electronic equipment. Magnetic ceramics are used in electronic circuits and in electric motors.
Glass products: Glass is one of the most important types of ceramic materials, mostly because of its transparency. Products made of glass include food containers, light bulbs, windows, and lenses for eyeglasses and telescopes. The list goes on and on you get the Idea. Not only the windows but fiberglass insulation is in most walls of many homes. Cables made of glass fibers transmit telephone calls cable and the internet. The main ingredient in glass is silica. I never really thought of glass as a type of ceramic, who knew??
